BALI — Welcome to Paradise

October 12, 2018 — May 26, 2019

Almost everyone goes to the Indonesian island of Bali, has been there or has it on their bucket list. Seductive travel descriptions and enthusiastic blogs guarantee you a dream vacation. That is not the complete story.

Museum Volkenkunde presents Bali on the basis of the famous ethnological collection and encounters with various islanders. Meet a Hindu priest who tries to maintain traditions and rituals, the activist artist Made Bayak who brings the plastic problem to the attention and with a resident who works in the tourism industry.

Learn more about the colonial era and how the rise of tourism is connected with it. Discover how paradise is under pressure, but that the culture is alive and kicking. Enter the exhibition as an inquisitive tourist and leave the museum as an inspired traveler with new insights and a more complete picture.
