by Hans Hägerdal

On July 9th 1756 a meeting was convened by Johannes Andreas Paravicini (1710-1771) on the isle of Timor on behalf of the V.O.C. so that a treaty could be signed and all the local rulers could pledge their loyalty to the V.O.C.

Johannes Andreas Paravicini (1710-1771), chief tradesman of the Dutch East Indies Trading company (V.O.C.), is depicted in the center of a banquet with rulers of Great Timor and neighboring islands. He was sent by the Governor-General to reinstate the authority of the V.O.C. in the area, after Portuguese and mestizos besieged the stronghold of Kupang seven years earlier.
