Art of the Ancestors extends well wishes to our extraordinary global community during this unprecedented time. In the wake of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), we encourage our readers to do their part to slow the spread and protect the safety and wellbeing of others, especially those most at risk. This is an effort that requires our collective dedication and participation. For more information on best practices, visit Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization.

Now, more than ever, we could all use something to lift our spirits. We are grateful to those who generously took the time to respond to our recent reader survey. Taking your thoughtful comments and suggestions to heart, Art of the Ancestors is listening carefully to guide the curation of our future content. Through these difficult times ahead, it is our intention to deliver a bit of magic, entertainment and beautiful art direct to your inbox in the months to come.

In review, many of our respondents expressed an abiding interest in learning more about the following topics, which we will take into consideration for subsequent Art of the Ancestors issues.

  • Mysticism, shamanism, and healing

  • Style classifications and patina studies

  • Area specific gallery expansions

  • More scholarly articles

  • Interviews with global art specialists

  • Additional textile arts

  • Traditional architecture

  • Colonial and missionary collecting

  • Scientific approaches to dating and authenticity

  • Op-eds

  • Field photography

  • Stronger emphasis on local perspectives

  • Warrior identity and weapons

  • Head-hunting

  • Body ornaments and jewelry

  • How to develop connoisseurship

  • Lost civilizations

  • Funerary arts and rituals

  • Charms and symbology

  • Geographical influence on art

  • Stories behind select masterworks

We are also pleased to announce that we will be facilitating a large-scale upgrade to our area-specific galleries. It is our hope that the inclusion of additional documented pieces with established museum provenances enables enhanced appreciation of Island Southeast Asian and Oceanic arts, cultures, and traditions.

With resolve and compassion, we can unite and overcome these trying times together.

Sincerely,

Steven G. Alpert & Art of the Ancestors Editorial Team
